About Us

Freestyle Martial Arts Education Across Devon
At YAMA, our Freestyle Martial Arts programme is designed to bring out the very best in every student through structured martial arts education, personal development and progressive learning.
Our students follow a carefully designed syllabus that develops both practical martial arts ability and the character expected of a Black Belt. Throughout their training, students are taught the principles of Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, Humility and Indomitable Spirit and are encouraged to demonstrate these values not only during lessons, but at home, at school and in everyday life.
Students study techniques and principles from established martial arts and combat disciplines. This includes punching techniques, combinations, footwork and head movement from Boxing; kicks and knee techniques from Taekwondo and Karate; and ground defence, escapes, self-defence and practical applications from Jujitsu.
For our younger students, martial arts education extends beyond physical techniques. Children study a structured, scenario-based self-defence programme that teaches awareness, decision-making, personal safety and appropriate responses to common situations or confrontations they may encounter in everyday life.
Personal development is also an important part of our grading curriculum. Students are encouraged to develop discipline, dedication, responsibility and positive habits outside the academy and complete age-appropriate developmental tasks at home and at school as part of their progression through the grades.
Our aim is not simply to teach students how to perform martial arts techniques. It is to provide a structured martial arts education that develops capable martial artists and confident, disciplined and respectful individuals.
