Martial Arts Classes & Services
Freestyle Adults Martial Arts Programme (age 13+ years)
Structured martial arts education for beginners through to Black Belt.
Whether you're taking your first martial arts lesson or returning with previous experience, our Adult Freestyle Martial Arts Programme provides a structured and progressive approach to learning martial arts in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Students follow the YAMA Freestyle Martial Arts syllabus, studying techniques, principles and practical applications from established disciplines including Taekwondo, Karate, Boxing and Jujitsu.
From your first lesson, our instructors will help you develop strong technical foundations before progressively introducing more advanced skills as your knowledge, confidence and ability develop.
What Will You Study?
Boxing
Students study punching technique, combinations, defensive movement, footwork, head movement, distance and timing, developing an understanding of effective striking and movement.
Taekwondo & Karate
Our syllabus incorporates a wide range of kicking techniques and principles drawn from Taekwondo and Karate, helping students develop balance, coordination, control, flexibility and effective application.
Jujitsu
Students study throws, escapes, ground defence, control and practical self-defence applications from Jujitsu, developing confidence and understanding across different ranges of martial arts training.
Practical Self-Defence
Alongside traditional martial arts study, students learn practical responses to common attacks and confrontations through our scenario-based self-defence curriculum.
Our approach to self-defence extends beyond physical techniques. Students are encouraged to develop their understanding of situational awareness, avoidance, distance management, de-escalation, decision-making and appropriate physical response.
A Progressive Journey Towards Black Belt
Every student has the opportunity to follow our structured grading syllabus, providing clear learning objectives and a progressive pathway from beginner through to advanced martial arts study.
Students develop their technical knowledge and practical ability before demonstrating their progress through formal grading assessments.
For those who choose to pursue it, the journey towards Black Belt represents years of learning, practice and personal development.
Technical ability alone, however, does not define a YAMA Black Belt.
Throughout their training, students are encouraged to understand and demonstrate our Black Belt principles of Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, Humility and Indomitable Spirit.
These principles form an important part of our martial arts education and the standards we expect throughout the academy.
Learn at Your Own Level
You don't need previous martial arts experience or exceptional physical fitness to begin.
Our instructors understand that every student starts from a different position. Where appropriate, techniques and training activities can be adapted to allow students to learn safely and progressively while developing their knowledge, physical ability and confidence.
Lessons are structured to be challenging, engaging and enjoyable, providing students with the opportunity to learn new skills, continually improve and work towards meaningful long-term goals.
Physical fitness, strength, coordination and mobility naturally develop through regular martial arts practice — but at YAMA, training is about much more than simply getting fit.
More Than a Workout
Martial arts provides an opportunity to continually learn and challenge yourself.
For some students, the goal is earning their Black Belt. Others want to develop practical self-defence skills, improve confidence, learn something new or simply enjoy the challenge of becoming a more capable martial artist.
Whatever your starting point, our instructors will support and guide you through a structured programme of continued learning and development.
Your first lesson is the beginning of the journey. Where that journey takes you is up to you.
